About us

No one should have to carry grief alone. Everyone, no matter how strong and independent they are, sometimes needs a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. To honor the memory of our lost loved ones, we need to share about their lives and our loss with others who care enough to listen. Too many people are not given permission or time to grieve.

The Bruderhof Grief Companion is a service offered by the Bruderhof Communities, an international movement of intentional communities. For over eighty years, we have tried to counter the increasing fragmentation and isolation of modern society by living together in settlements where we can love and care for one another, carry one another's burdens, and make sure no one falls through the cracks. To learn more about who we are and why we live together, visit the Bruderhof website.

During these years we have experienced—as individuals, as families, and as a community—the death of children, siblings, spouses, parents and grandparents. Some died peacefully of old age, others of cancer or other terminal illness, others in sudden, tragic accidents. This website will highlight some of these stories, as well as help connect you with the resources on the web best suited to your own needs.

Since we began in 1920 the Bruderhof has published books and periodicals--and more recently websites--to help and encourage people wherever they are on the road to wholeness and healing. Our basis is faith in Christ, but we acknowledge God’s working in all people. To learn more about various projects, visit the Bruderhof Foundation website.

“There is no ‘answer’ to the riddle of grief.
But if one person, alone, cannot hold up
under the crushing weight of loss,
the heaviest burden can be lifted,
or at least lightened,
when it is shared.”
Johann Christoph Arnold
